If you are looking out for an All-American style diner, Clinton Street Baking Company is the real deal. Conceptualized and created by a husband-wife duo in New York, the restaurant’s iconic blueberry pancakes have won the accolade of ‘best in the city’ by New York Magazine, twice in a row! However, they are not just about baking… I raved about their life-changing 15-hour smoked beef ribs here before, and I was recently invited back, a gap of nearly a year since my last visit.
The interiors haven’t changed much, but the lighting has been dimmed down for a more cozier ambiance for the evenings. The only downside with this is that my photography skills were greatly challenged with the lack of light!
Being an All-American chain, everything here is made with ‘love and butter’. However, you might find some solace from all that calorie-laden guilt by the fact that everything at Clinton Street Baking Company is made of 100% fresh, organic produce!
Here is a look at what we had:
Mini Maryland Crab Cakes: Crunchy on the outside, these little patties are rather meaty and go beautifully well with the creamy seafood dip on the side.
Chile Chicken Wings: Move over ordinary chicken wings. These beauties have been marinated in a very special Chili Con Carne style sauce. The skin is crisp, yet the meat itself is absolutely tender and juicy.
Loaded Potato Skins: A fancy variation to ordinary wedges, these ‘loaded potato skins’ have been topped with deep-fried garlic and chives. They taste even better with dollops of that sour cream that comes on the side!
15 Hour Smoked Beef Ribs: An intensely flavored, ‘falling off the bone’ treat that is a must for any lover of beef ribs. This time round, we asked for sweet potato fries on the side.
Buttermilk Fried Chicken: A super crunchy exterior with succulently soft, juicy chicken on the inside. A drizzle of maple syrup adds an unexpected hint of sweetness, as does the semolina cake on the side! An unusual play of flavors, and despite detesting gherkins, I found myself eating that entire pickle on the coleslaw as a respite from all the richness.
Poblano Mac & Cheese: This was served as a side dish, but I can easily have it as a main-course. This is no ordinary mac & cheese. With an intense hit of truffle goodness and a mild hint of Mexican Poblano chili heat, the flavor hit in this bowl is unexpectedly delicious for something that feigns to look so ordinary!
Bargain Alert! Buy a burger at Clinton Street Baking Company on any weekday, and get any one of their iconic milkshakes (worth AED 35 each) absolutely free! I would strongly suggest their Wild Maine Blueberry Shake. Wickedly thick and creamy, you get hints of fresh blueberries in every sip.
Overall, Clinton Street Baking Company is always a pleasure to visit. The unusually good, all-American grub made of 100% organic ingredients is a treat indeed – and don’t forget to try their smoked ribs!
