Dubai’s very first BBC Good Food Show

After the pre-launch press lunch at Vida Downtown I was fortunate enough to be invited to last week (read all about it here), I was super excited about attending the BBC Food Food Show’s very first stint in the World Trade Center this weekend.

It was a 3-day affair running from 17th to 19th December, and this was a hall full of delights for serious UAE foodies (shopping, tasting and inspirations from world renowned chefs!).

There were stalls from various food vendors, many giving away free samples of their wares.

Others showcased nifty kitchen gadgets, with my favorite brand Lakeland taking up most of my attention.

Lurpak was hosting a Cake Design Competition, and the Christmas Cake entries on display were true works of art!

I also met celebrity bloggers Ishita Saha (author of the Ishita Unbblogged blog) and Debbie Rogers (author of the Coffee Cakes &Running blog). This lovely, talented duo are co-authors of FoodeMag Dxb, the UAE’s very first online food and travel magazine that runs solely on the writing contributions of bloggers.

The highlight of the BBC Good Food Show is getting to meet celebrity chefs. I was just getting over meeting Andy Bates and Silvena Rowe at the press launch, and here I was at a live show hosted by Paul Hollywood!

Larger than life and flamboyant with his passion for baking, Paul Hollywood is a British chef (yes, the surname is deceptive) who is best known for his role as judge on the very popular television series ‘The Great British Bakeoff’.

Paul has charismatic stage presence, and is absolutely hilarious!

Paul got the crowd super excited!

This lovely couple took on Paul’s dancing challenge, and got awarded a wooden spoon autographed by Paul. ‘Oh the things we do for a spoon with a bit of ink!’ he commented 😀

I loved Paul’s references to his very prim and proper British baking maven Mary Berry, and he threw us some gems of advice on baking:

  • Always use ice-cold water when making bread dough.
  • Baking a roulade is a surefire way of impressing that special girl (Paul’s advice to his 12 year-old son).
  • The French are overrated. The British bake better!

Paul baked fresh cheese  flat-bread, and a Chocolate & Cherry Roulade on stage. I got to taste the later, and wow was it good! Goes to show sometimes the simplest ingredients make for the tastiest treats. Click here for the recipe.

One lucky attendee walked away with an autographed copy of Paul’s book, ‘Paul Hollywood’s Bread’.

I couldn’t stay on to see Atul Kochhar in action, but I am planning to try out his dishes at Rang Mahal (Fairmont Dubai) sometime soon.

Dubai’s first ever BBC Good Food Show was tinged with tragedy, with the sudden unforeseen demise of CPI group’s chairman, Mr. Dominic De Sousa. Mr. De Sousa built a media giant on his own, and was responsible for bringing the ever popular BBC Good Food magazine to the UAE. He collapsed on stage while hosting the BBC Good Food Awards last Wednesday (The National). May he rest in peace.

Mr. De Sousa would be proud of the success this very first show has had, and I look forward to an even bigger, better BBC Good Food Show next year.
