Last weekend, my baby girl Farasha and I headed out to spend a weekend of leisure, pool time and great food at newly opened Hyatt Place, Wasl District Dubai.
Being over-confident with directions and over-trusting Google Maps, I ended up at Hyatt Place Jumeirah instead! I was assuming ‘Wasl District’ was in Jumeirah, but it turns out this branch is bang opposite Al Ghurair Centre in the heart of busy, bustling Deira, Dubai.
The Jumeirah branch is yet to open, and it was almost like having a pre-Halloween trick played on me when I drove up the empty driveway only to be informed by a lone security personnel that the place was closed!
Hyatt Place Wasl District was launched this April 2019, and unlike the one I drove into an hour prior, this place was buzzing with life!
I drove into the basement parking, preferring to self-park even though a valet service was available.
Despite the heavy traffic, the reception staff were courteous and helpful.
For a 4-star property, our room was really A-class. It had a fully functional kitchen, complete with a cooking range, cutlery, pots and pans and even a washing machine. The living room featured a comfortable corner sofa, and both this space and the bedroom had wide screen tv’s.
The room was flooded with natural light and had a great view of the hotel’s Arabesque architecture and glimpses of Deira city.
I also loved the personal touch of leaving a welcome note and a platter of assorted cakes and fruit to welcome us in.
Click on my IGTV post below for a virtual tour of our room! My daughter Farasha is starting to ace at these, and is urging everyone to follow @thefarashafiles as well 😉
A night’s stay at Hyat Place gives you access to the gym and pool facilities, as well as a breakfast at their all-day dining restaurant Gallery Café.
By the Pool
The pool is located on the 14th floor. When we got there, it was already occupied by a large group of young girls. The pool is not very large, and we found ourselves sitting in the baby area till the crowd reduced as the capacity of the main pool is set to a maximum of 10 people.
All-Day Dining at Gallery Café
We had dinner as well as breakfast and lunch the following day at Gallery Café, the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant.
The menu is a one-pager yet it covers multiple cuisines including Arabic, pan-Asian and Indian. My favorites here included the divinely delicious Riyash (succulently soft and moreishly good lamb chops marinated in Arabic spices) and the Satay Chicken skewers. I often shy away from ordering satay as I’m not a fan of over-cooked chicken, but at Gallery Café these skewers are unbelievably tender and even my super picky 8-year-old devoured them.
Breakfast starts as early as 6.30 am and goes on till 10.30 am. There’s a warning sticker in the elevator about peak times at breakfast, but ofcourse I over-slept and only got there by 9. We were lucky to get a table as there were quite a few people waiting outside in queue.
The breakfast features and international buffet of widely eaten breakfasts including fresh fruit, porridge, paratha and chole, bakery goods and Arabic mezze. I love eggs for breakfast and had mine whipped up into a spicy omlette at the live egg-cooking counter. I also tried the not so commonly seen Seviyan Upma here and downed it with a hot cup of Masala Chai.
The hotel also has a cosy bar, nestled within Gallery Café. The bar operates in the evenings and churns out great drinks and groovy music. It is a great place to catch up with a crowd of friends, and they even have pool tables for those who play.
I discovered an amazing Italian red wine at Focus Bar which was recommended by barman Baljeet. I had a glass at the bar, and a second with my lamb chops. The staff have a knack at choosing drinks as per a customer’s taste.
Overall, we enjoyed a very relaxing, much needed break at Hyatt Place Wasl District. For a 4 star property, this brand new hotel provides great facilities and the central location is an added bonus for tourists as well as business guests.
